Vacation!

We're back from our first official family vacation (long weekends don't really count, right?). We flew into Phoenix to meet our new niece, Annika, and to visit her big sister Nikki. Then we drove to San Diego for the week (CA was a new destination for us). Ryan was great on the airplane! The highlights....

Swimming with cousin Nikki at La Casa de Murr in Surprise, AZ. The accomodations were great!

Hey, who's that Mom?...did you forget about me? (Aunt Kim with Annika...Ryan was upset about having to smile, or something. He didn't seem to care that I was holding a baby.)

Uncle Jason, Nikki, and Uncle John enjoying strawberry margaritas at a Mexican restaurant in Surprise.

USS Midway - aircraft carrier museum in San Diego (very cool!). Most recently, was used in Desert Storm. You could visit the flight deck, the hangar deck, the Admiral and Captains quarters, and several other areas of the ship. Across the bay you could see the USS Reagan, active duty.

The first mission in San Diego. At least one of the bells in the bell tower was brought from Spain. On the grounds there was a church and chapel, which Ryan pronounced 'ch-apple.'

Hotel del Coronodo (aka The Del) - built in 1888. It's a high class place, even though I'm sure it's missing some modern amenities.

On the beach on Coronodo Island - Ryan's first encounter with the ocean (he loved it!)

The San Diego zoo was great! Mom's favorite animal (and therefore everyone else's favorite too) were the Panda bears. We took a tour of the zoo on a double decker bus and also rode on the sky tram.

Silly giraffes - don't get tangled!

Zhen Zhen munching on some bamboo - yum! When we went back later in the day, she was taking a nap...stretched out on the rock on the right. Pandas are sensitive to loud noise, so we had to be very quiet and only a certain number of people were allowed in the viewing area at one time. There was an older Panda also on display, but she was a bit more stubborn and stayed out of sight.

Dad & Ryan on the rocks in La Jolla Cove. We went there to see the harbor seals, which come right up on the beach/rocks. It was an overcast morning, so the pictures don't show how pretty the area really is.

Hello, Mr. Seal!

The Botanical garden in Balboa Park.

A neat alligator statue in Balboa Park.

Old San Diego...where the first Californians settled.

A neat chuch in Old Town.

Petco Park, home to the San Diego Padres. Also where we watched the Cubs loose twice. Boo!

The Arizona Murrs came to San Diego to go to the ballgame with us (Carol, Nikki, John and Annika - attended her first ball game at 5 weeks old!).

The Sugar Grove Murrs dressed in their best Cubs apparel (did I mention that they lost both games that we went to?).
Ryan and Nikki at a neat Mexican restaurant in Old Town, where we went for lunch before heading home.

P-A-R-K

Now that the weather has warmed up, we've been spending lots of time at the parks near our house. Ryan loooves to go. Gram & Ryan were at the park at 8:15 Saturday morning (too early for Mom!). And later he went again...this time with Mom and Grandma too. Ryan loves the slides! This weekend he was quite brave and went down the BIG slide.

Down the tunnel slide at Frontier Park!

Whooo!....down he goes!

St Louis!

We spent last weekend in St. Louis with the grandparents....Cubs v. Cards at Busch Stadium on Saturday and Grant's Park on Sunday. The Cubbies were not victorious (where was their offense?!), but it was a fun weekend with the family. The weather was awesome! - 85 and sunny. It was hard to come home to rain, rain and more rain.
Our first visit to the new Busch stadium. Nice park! even if it is in St. Louis.

The view from our seats.....the Arch and clear blue skies.

Beth and Rich came from Cardondale for the game!

Three Cubbie fans!

Poppy, Gram and Ryan chilling before the game.
The covered bridge leading to Grant's Farm

A historic Bud wagon in the stables.

The map said that we should take a picture at this location.

Ryan did NOT like riding the carousel, so we rode together (is there a weight limit on this thing?)

Another photo opportunity at the Clydesdale stables
Hello, Mr. Buffalo. Where are your wings?
A real, live Budweiser Clydesdale!....or is it an InBev horse?
A very furry miniature pony

Ryan's first trip to the Loop

Ryan went with Jason and his two co-workers on a downtown adventure. The Art Institute. Grant Park. Millenium Park. He has now officially been to the Loop. Thanks to Jason's friend Steve for the pics!
